Newton Aycliffe Pipe Band’s History
Newton Aycliffe Pipe Band was formed in 1961 by Pipe Major William ‘Billy’ Brown and by the 1970’s the band were at the very top of their respective competition level. In 1974 the band became Champion of Champions at Grade 4.
Since those early days the band has been through many highs and lows. In 1995 the band was forced to merge with another band in order to try and hold on to its heritage through a difficult period. Unfortunately this merge did not work and in 1997 Newton Aycliffe Pipe Band was reborn with a drive to succeed.
The band has now successfully expanded itself through the recruitment of new players along with the help of high grade pipers and drummers. The band has now risen back to being one of the largest bands in the area and we are back competing once again.
Over the years Newton Aycliffe Pipe Band has attended many festivals in Poland, Germany and Syria, more recently however the band has travelled abroad to many Folk Festivals across Europe including Holland in 1999 and again in 2011, France in 1999 then again in 2006, twice to Sicily and Germany in 2008. Newton Aycliffe Pipe Band recently attended PipeFest in 2014 which was held in Stirling to celebrate the 700th Anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn where a large number of Pipe Bands from across the world joined together, witnessed by thousands of spectators marching from Stirling Castle and through Stirling City.
